A Community of Love Beyond Belief: Transforming Ourselves, Houston and the World
Houston Pride Parade

Pride Parade

Each June, First Church joins fellow UU’s from the Greater Houston area to show our solidarity with the GLBT community by participating in the Houston's Pride Parade.

This Web page is designed to provide our members with details on participating in the parade. We'll update this page again in spring 2012 as we begin making preparations for the June 2012 parade.

Date: Saturday, June 25, 2011

  • 2011 Parade Theme: "Live. Love. Be."
  • Location: Lower Westheimer
  • Parade lasts from 8:15 pm - 11:00 pm
  • We are supposed to assemble for the parade lineup at 6:00 pm at the northwest corner of Kipling and Hazard streets (see map below). Please wear something that glows in the dark like a neon necklace, bracelet, or flashing pin.
  • See below for "Parade Details," or contact Sharon Scherer Lockridge, sharon_scherer@yahoo.com

Parade Details

Parade Route and Map

Houston Pride Parade

  • The parade route is highlighted in green, and runs from Westheimer and Hazard to Westheimer and Stanford. The route is approximately one mile long.
  • The parade assembly area is highlighted in light blue: We will assemble at the northwest corner of the interesection of Kipling and Hazard, marked by the red "X."

Parking

  • After the parade ends, we will undoubtedly need to ferry some of our fellow UU marchers back to their cars parked near the parade assembly area.
  • If you can, please consider parking near the end of the parade route so that you can give fellow UU marchers a ride back to their cars. (The Pride Festival, held during the daytime, will take place along Westheimer.)
  • If parking near the parade endpoint is not practical for you, then you might want to park near the parade assembly area. If so, consider parking just south of W. Alabama St. -- there is usually plenty of parking available in that area.

1 Vehicle in Our Parade Entry

We'll have a vehicle in the parade so that those who cannot walk the parade route can participate. If you want to ride in a vehicle, please contact Sharon Scherer Lockridge, sharon_scherer@yahoo.com

BYOH2O

Please bring water to keep yourself hydrated.

Stuff to Carry in the Parade

We have a few items to carry in the parade:

  • A few banners indicating that we're "Unitarian Universalist Churches"
  • Some 12"x18" Pride flags on sticks
  • A 3'x5' Pride flag

Be Creative!

  • Make your own sign
  • Wear festive clothing

In order to protect our tax-exempt status, please do not wear, display, or distribute any clothing, buttons, shirts, literature, etc. supporting a particular candidate for public office, or a particular political party. Also, the Pride Parade Committee asks that no animals be brought to the parade.Thank you.
