Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender
You are welcome at First Church Houston! Regardless of your sexual orientation, you will find a spiritual home at First Church that accepts, embraces and loves you just the way you are.
Unitarian Universalists affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person, and stand on the side of love. Our minister conducts same-sex and opposite sex services of union with the same words, because in Unitarian Universalism, there is no difference. Our educational programs help destroy myths, misinformation and homophobia in the congregation and in the community. In fact, First Church is recognized by our denomination as a "Welcoming Congregation," meaning we are committed to being inclusive and expressive of the concerns of LGBTs at every level of congregational life — in worship, in programs, and in social occasions.
First Church has long stood for the the rights of people of all sexual orientations. We have participated in Houston's Pride Parade for decades. In 1987 we founded the Houston Area Teen Coalition of Homosexuals (HATCH) to provide a venue for gay and lesbian youth to meet and support one another. HATCH now meets at the Montrose Counseling Center. The Houston chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG Houston) held its initial meetings at First Church. We support all of these groups through our Sunday morning shared offerings, where we give half of the funds donated during Sunday morning worship to non profit organizations we support. Moreover, many of our members, lay leaders, and past ministers are LGBTs.
So drop by next Sunday morning, worship with us, introduce yourself, meet with one of our lay leaders, and otherwise get to know us!
